The series covers switchgear and controlgear for circuits with rated voltages up to 1000 V AC or 1500 V DC. Part 1 establishes common definitions, operating conditions, constructional requirements and tests (including EMC and environmental tests) for the entire series.
The series does not contain railway-specific requirements; IEC 60077 standards additionally apply to rolling stock.
A declaration of conformity with the relevant part of IEC 60947 confirms the tested switching capacity, utilization category and short-circuit coordination of equipment in circuits up to 1000 V AC / 1500 V DC, forming the basis for selection in onboard and trackside switchboards; for rolling stock, the designer must additionally check IEC 60077 requirements.
