What the standard covers

The standard covers insulation coordination for equipment with rated voltage up to 1000 V AC or 1500 V DC connected to low-voltage systems, for frequencies up to 30 kHz and altitudes up to 2000 m (with guidance for higher altitudes).

It specifies principles for determining clearances in air, creepage distances and criteria for solid insulation depending on overvoltage category, pollution degree and material group, as well as electrical test methods.

It does not cover distances through liquid insulation, gases other than air or compressed air.

What this means for selection

A reference to IEC 60664-1 stating the overvoltage category and pollution degree indicates the installation conditions for which a component's insulation was designed (e.g. PD3 in an underfloor area), which the designer must compare with the route's altitude and climatic requirements.
