What it covers

The standard covers control and protective devices and their accessories rated up to 1500 V, intended for starting, stopping, regulating, controlling or protecting motors, generators, heating equipment and other equipment controlling an industrial process, installed in non-hazardous locations under the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, at ambient temperature 0–40 °C.

Examples include manual and magnetic starters and controllers, thermal and magnetic overload relays, pushbutton stations, control-circuit switches and relays, float, flow, pressure and vacuum switches, resistors and rheostats, proximity sensors, timers and time switches.

It does not cover power supplies, programmable controllers, assemblies solely for power distribution, power-factor correction assemblies, motor control centers (MCCs) or industrial control panels.

What the certificate demonstrates

Certification to CSA C22.2 No. 14 permits control equipment to be installed in Canada under the CE Code; combined with UL 508 it provides cULus or cCSAus marking accepted on both sides of the border. It is the Canadian counterpart to UL 508 with a similar scope (the same 1500 V limit and 0–40 °C ambient range) and remains a separate CSA document.

CSA lists the 2018 edition, reaffirmed in 2022, as active. For contactors, starters and semiconductor motor controllers, CSA and UL issued bi-national CSA C22.2 No. 60947-4-1 / UL 60947-4-1 and CSA C22.2 No. 60947-4-2 / UL 60947-4-2 as alternatives to No. 14 and UL 508; CSA certification has no formal regulatory role in the EU.

Certification process

Approval is issued by CSA Group (CSA, cCSAus mark) or another body accredited in Canada (e.g. UL with cUL/cULus, Intertek cETL) with production surveillance; results are published in the CSA Certified Product Listing or UL Product iQ.

Scope, classes and levels

  • rated voltage up to 1500 V
  • ambient temperature 0–40 °C unless otherwise marked

What to check in the datasheet and certificate

Check whether the datasheet gives a Canadian marking (cULus, cCSAus or CSA) with file number, whether contactors and starters cite CSA C22.2 No. 60947-4-1 instead of No. 14, and the voltage/current range covered by certification.
