What the standard covers

The series applies to fuses with enclosed current-limiting fuse-links having a breaking capacity of at least 6 kA, for protection of AC circuits with rated voltage up to 1000 V and DC circuits up to 1500 V. Part 1 gives general requirements; Part 2 gives supplementary requirements for fuses operated by authorised persons (industrial applications), with examples of standardised systems A–K including NH blade, bolted and cylindrical fuse-links and gK up to 4800 A; Part 4 covers fuse-links for protection of semiconductor devices (aR/gR), allowing higher rated voltages; Part 6 covers gPV fuse-links for PV strings and arrays up to 1500 V DC; Part 7 covers fuse-links for protection of batteries and battery systems up to 1500 V DC.

Part 1 excludes miniature fuses (IEC 60127) and states that fuses for special applications, including some for railway rolling stock, require separate modifications and supplements. The series is a general standard for fixed installations and equipment; it contains no railway-specific requirements - HV rolling-stock fuses (600–3000 V DC) are covered by EN IEC 60077-5, which took IEC 60269-1 into account during development.

What this means for selection

A declaration to IEC 60269-1/-2/-4 confirms standardised time-current characteristics, utilisation category (gG, aR, gR, gPV) and breaking capacity of the fuse-link in circuits up to 1000 V AC / 1500 V DC - sufficient for fixed installations and auxiliary equipment; for rolling-stock traction circuits, the designer must additionally check EN IEC 60077-5 requirements or the manufacturer's specification for voltages above 1500 V DC.

Frequently asked questions

Is a fuse compliant with IEC 60269 suitable for rolling stock?

The IEC 60269 series is a standard for fixed installations and equipment (AC up to 1000 V, DC up to 1500 V). Part 1 states that rolling-stock fuses require separate supplementary requirements - IEC 60077-5 is the relevant standard for vehicle HV circuits.

Which parts are declared by products on this website?

Parts 1 (general) and 2 (industrial NH and cylindrical fuse-links) - gG fuses for substations and trackside cabinets; Part 4 - aR/gR fuse-links for semiconductor protection; Part 7 - gBAT fuse-links for battery protection up to 1500 V DC.
