What the standard covers

Part 1 specifies general service conditions and requirements for all electrical equipment installed in the main, auxiliary, control and signalling circuits of railway vehicles; it introduces a classification of equipment types and procedures for temperature tests.

Part 2 gives general rules for electrotechnical components (apparatus). Part 3 covers DC circuit-breakers rated up to 3000 V DC, while Part 4 covers AC circuit-breakers supplied from the traction system at voltages according to IEC 60850 (industrial circuit-breakers to IEC 62271-100 are outside its scope).

Part 5 covers high-voltage fuses for main and auxiliary circuits rated 600–3000 V DC and AC auxiliary circuits up to 1500 V. The series applies to rolling stock and is the product standard for electromechanical apparatus, as opposed to EN 50155 for electronic equipment.

What this means for selection

A fuse declared to IEC 60077-5 has its breaking capacity verified through test cycles for 600–3000 V DC vehicle circuits; industrial fuses to IEC 60269 are not tested under these conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between IEC 60077 and EN 50155?

EN 50155 covers electronic equipment, while IEC/EN 60077 covers electrical equipment for rolling stock: electrotechnical apparatus (Part 2), DC and AC circuit-breakers (Parts 3 and 4) and HV fuses for 600–3000 V DC (Part 5).

Why does a vehicle fuse use IEC 60077-5 instead of IEC 60269 alone?

IEC 60269-1 states that fuses for rolling stock require separate supplementary requirements. IEC 60077-5 specifies test cycles for 600–3000 V DC vehicle circuits that are not included in the IEC 60269 series.
