What it covers

The UL Recognized Component Mark covers components and subassemblies intended for incorporation into a larger UL-certified (Listed) end product: wires, cable assemblies, power supplies, printed circuit boards, plastics, switches and motors.

The mark has three regional variants: US only, Canada only (C-UR), and combined US/Canada (cURus). The UL Listed mark applies to a complete end product that operates independently after installation; the Recognized mark applies to a part that is not itself a complete product.

What the certificate demonstrates

The mark demonstrates that representative samples of the component met UL requirements within the scope defined in the report and that the manufacturer is subject to the Follow-Up Services program (periodic production inspections). The mark is linked to Conditions of Acceptability specifying permitted installation conditions (enclosure, wiring, temperature limitations); use outside those conditions invalidates the certification.

The Recognized mark does not certify a complete stand-alone product; component suitability is assessed only as part of certification of the end product.

How certification is performed

UL tests representative samples of the component to the applicable UL standard (for Canada, to Canadian standards because Canadian requirements differ from US requirements). The result is a report containing the Conditions of Acceptability, also available in the UL database (formerly Online Certifications Directory, now Product iQ).

The manufacturer receives the right to use the reversed “UR” symbol (without a circle, unlike the circled Listed mark), with “c” and “us” additions for both markets. UL representatives periodically visit the manufacturing facility (Follow-Up Services) and verify that the product continues to correspond to the tested samples.

What to check in the datasheet and certificate

Check the UL file number (E-number) and category (CCN) in the catalogue data, and read the Conditions of Acceptability in Product iQ, because they determine whether the component can be used in the intended installation without additional end-product testing. A UR mark without a file number does not allow the certification scope to be verified.
