What it covers

The standard covers manually reset supplementary protectors: overcurrent, overvoltage, undervoltage and relay-operated devices, single- and multi-pole, for controlling AC loads (single- and multi-phase) or DC loads rated up to 600 V, together with accessories such as alarm and auxiliary contacts.

These products are components inside electrical equipment for control circuits, extra-low-voltage power circuits, remote-control circuits and signalling circuits under the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I.

The standard covers protectors both capable and incapable of interrupting short-circuit currents and excludes their use for overcurrent protection of circuits defined by the CE Code as branch circuits.

What the certificate demonstrates

Certification to CSA C22.2 No. 235 approves a supplementary protector as a built-in component in equipment certified for the Canadian market; combined with UL 1077 it gives cURus marking (Recognized Component for the USA and Canada).

UL identifies CSA C22.2 No. 235 as the Canadian counterpart to UL 1077 for supplementary protectors. The certificate does not authorize use as a branch-circuit breaker under the CE Code; for that, a product to CSA C22.2 No. 5 (UL 489) is required.

The certificate has no formal regulatory role in the EU.

Certification process

Approval takes the form of a component certificate (CSA or cUR/cURus) with conditions of use assessed in the end product and with production surveillance.

Scope, classes and levels

  • rated voltage up to 600 V AC or DC
  • manual reset

What to check in the datasheet and certificate

Check whether the datasheet states cURus (UL 1077 + CSA C22.2 No. 235) with file number, whether the product declares short-circuit interruption capability and at what current and voltage, and whether the branch circuit in the cabinet has separate protection to CSA C22.2 No. 5 / UL 489.
