What the standard covers

The series covers safety-related systems based on electrical, electronic and programmable electronic (E/E/PE) technology that perform safety functions. It is a basic safety publication (IEC Guide 104) and a horizontal standard on which committees build sector and product standards; it is applied directly where no sector-specific standard exists.

It defines the safety lifecycle and Safety Integrity Levels (SIL). For railways, the sector-specific standards are EN 50126/50128/50129.

What this means for selection

An SIL declaration according to IEC 61508 for an encoder, relay or power supply provides the data (PFH, SFF, HFT) needed to demonstrate a safety function; for railway systems, it must be mapped to EN 50129/50126.
