Sensata/BEI EAR-001 and EAR-002 encoder signal splitters are certified functional-safety interfaces that include an encoder in a safety loop while simultaneously duplicating its signal for non-safety systems. One encoder on the shaft can therefore serve two independent receivers: a safety controller or safety relay, and a standard drive, PLC or display, without a second encoder on the same shaft.
The primary output, covered by the safety assessment, repeats the interface of the connected encoder and is fully compatible with Sensata/BEI safety controllers and relays. The secondary repeater output is not safety-rated; the user selects TTL/RS422 or HTL for it independently of the encoder signal. EAR-001 accepts TTL/RS422 and 1 Vpp sine encoders, while EAR-002 accepts HTL encoders. The splitter supplies the encoder and works with both standard encoders and encoders certified for safety applications. The achievable integrity level depends on the encoder and controller in the loop and reaches SIL3 / PLe (Category 4); requirements are described in the manufacturer’s safety manual.
In a rail vehicle, the splitter connects one encoder on an axle or traction motor to a safety function such as speed monitoring or anti-slip protection and at the same time to the traction-control or diagnostic system. DIN-rail housing, IP20 protection, intended for installation in an equipment cabinet.
