What it covers

A mark with the small letters “c” and “us” on either side of the UL symbol means that the product meets both Canadian and US requirements. The UL mark without indicators refers to safety standards recognized in the United States; the C-UL mark (“c” only) refers to Canadian standards, which differ from US requirements.

An analogous variant exists for components (cURus, C-UL-US Component Recognition Mark).

What the certificate demonstrates

The mark demonstrates that representative samples met the requirements of the applicable US and Canadian standards and that UL performs periodic inspections of the manufacturing facility. Recognition in the Canadian market is based on UL LLC accreditation by SCC, Canada's national accreditation body for testing and certification organizations.

The cULus component mark (cURus) is subject to the same limitations as UL Recognized: Conditions of Acceptability apply and the component is evaluated in the end product.

How certification is performed

UL tests the product to US (UL) and Canadian (CSA C22.2 or ULC) standards and issues one report covering both markets. After certification, the manufacturer uses one combined mark instead of two separate marks. UL representatives periodically visit the manufacturing facility and verify that the product continues to meet Canadian and US requirements.

Certificates are publicly available in the Product iQ database.

Scope, classes and levels

  • “c” indicator: Canada
  • “us” indicator: USA
  • no indicators: USA only

What to check in the datasheet and certificate

Check whether the mark contains both indicators (“c” and “us”) and whether the component has Listed or Recognized status; verify the UL file number in Product iQ, where the certification scope for each country is shown.
