Safety of machinery - functional safety of safety-related control systems.
The standard specifies requirements for the design, integration and validation of safety-related control systems (SCS) for machinery in high-demand or continuous-demand mode, as a sector standard based on IEC 61508. The 2021 edition extends the scope from electrical, electronic and programmable systems to other technologies, adds functional-safety planning, configuration management, parameterization, references to cybersecurity, proof testing, software use cases and new informative annexes with calculation examples.
It does not cover electrical hazards arising from the control equipment itself or requirements for guards. SIL 1–3 levels apply to machinery safety functions.
The statement “EMC - increased immunity levels according to IEC 62061” in a datasheet means that the manufacturer tested the component’s electromagnetic immunity at levels higher than those in the generic industrial-environment standard IEC 61000-6-2, using an assessment criterion referenced to the safety function.
The statement alone does not define the component’s SIL level and does not replace a functional-safety certificate; SIL results from the PFHd, SFF and architecture data stated separately.
Electromagnetic immunity testing of equipment performing safety functions is carried out using IEC 61000-4 series methods at increased levels compared with the generic industrial-environment standard IEC 61000-6-2, with an assessment criterion referenced to the safety function: the function is maintained or, in the event of a transient or persistent disturbance, a defined safe state is maintained or reached within the specified fault-reaction time.
Levels and criteria are given in EMC standards intended for safety functions: IEC 61000-6-7:2014 (generic standard for industrial locations) and IEC 61326-3-1:2017 (measurement and control equipment, SIL 1–3, RF field up to 6 GHz); the methodology for achieving functional safety with regard to electromagnetic phenomena is described in IEC 61000-1-2:2016.
Check which EMC standard the manufacturer cites (IEC 61000-6-7, IEC 61326-3-1 or IEC 61000-6-2), the test levels (V/m, kV) and the assessment criterion used; for a safety function, separately require SIL or PL data (PFHd, SFF, category) and a certificate from an assessment body.
