Safety of machinery - safety-related parts of control systems; Performance Levels (PL).
The standard provides methodology, requirements and guidance for the design and integration of safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS) for machinery, including software, regardless of technology (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical).
It applies to high-demand and continuous-demand modes; low-demand mode is outside the scope. The standard does not specify which PL or safety functions are required for a particular machine and does not cover IT security. As a type-B standard, it is a reference for standards harmonized with Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
An encoder with a declared PL and category according to ISO 13849-1 can be included in the PL calculation for the complete safety function (e.g. speed monitoring) without additional component validation by the integrator.
