What the standard covers

The standard specifies requirements and recommendations for the design, integration and validation of safety-related adjustable speed power drive systems, PDS(SR), in their electrical/electronic/programmable part. It places the requirements within the IEC 61508 framework and treats the PDS(SR) as a subsystem of a safety system; it defines drive safety sub-functions and their SIL.

The 2016 edition removed proof-test requirements as not appropriate for drives and clarified that low-demand mode remains outside the scope.

What this means for selection

An encoder or signal distributor declaring compliance with IEC 61800-5-2 provides the data (SIL, PFH) required by the safe-drive integrator to demonstrate the safety sub-function of the complete PDS(SR).
