What the standard covers

Part 12 specifies requirements for power metering and monitoring devices (PMD) in single- and three-phase AC systems up to 1000 V and DC systems up to 1500 V, whether fixed or portable, indoor or outdoor, for industrial and commercial applications.

The 2018 edition introduced three PMD categories with a minimum set of functions and moved PMD-A to the IEC 62586 series. The standard does not cover billing meters according to IEC 62053, power-quality instruments according to IEC 62586 or analogue instruments according to IEC 60051; energy-measurement uncertainty is derived from IEC 62053.

What this means for selection

The accuracy class and PMD category according to IEC 61557-12 make it possible to select a power monitoring device for switchboard monitoring in substations and technical facilities with clearly defined energy-measurement uncertainty.
