What it covers

DNV Type Approval covers electrical, electronic and programmable components and systems intended for ships, offshore units and high-speed craft classed by DNV: electrical machines, main, emergency and distribution switchboards, power-management systems, transformers and converters, power electronics, cables, protective devices, measuring and control equipment.

The certificate states the product type, holder, application limitations (e.g. required installation in a shielded cabinet with a specified IP rating), tests performed according to DNV-CG-0339 and assigned location classes: Temperature, Humidity, Vibration, EMC and Enclosure.

DNV GL certificates issued before the name change remain valid; the transition period for product certificates is 5 years.

What the certificate demonstrates

The certificate demonstrates that DNV reviewed the documentation and type-test results according to DNV-CG-0339 and assigned environmental classes for specified installation locations on a ship. The classes in the certificate limit application: a product with Temperature A (0–45 °C in the 2015 edition) and Enclosure B is suitable only for spaces with those conditions.

The certificate does not demonstrate compliance with railway standards (EN 50155, EN 45545) or requirements of other classification societies.

Certification process

DNV performs design-documentation approval, product certification and survey after installation on the ship. The environmental test scope for a particular product is determined individually by DNV according to the application and installation location, using DNV-CG-0339. The certificate has a specified validity date and requires periodic assessment after 2 and 3.5 years to verify that there have been no changes to design, systems, software versions, components or materials.

The certificate specifies product marking requirements, such as a label with manufacturer name, part number and revision.

Scope, classes and levels

  • location classes in certificate: Temperature A–D, Humidity A–B, Vibration A–C, EMC A–B, Enclosure A–D
  • periodic assessment after 2 and 3.5 years
  • DNV GL → DNV name transition period: 5 years for product certificates

What to check in the datasheet and certificate

Check the certificate number (format TAxxxxxxxx), approved types, Application/Limitation section, assigned Temperature/Humidity/Vibration/EMC/Enclosure classes and the “valid until” date; verify the entry in DNV Approval Finder.
