QUINT - Capacitor Modules

QUINT4-CAP capacitor modules store 4 kJ, 8 kJ or 16 kJ of energy and support a 24 V DC bus at 5 A, 10 A or 20 A respectively. The input accepts 22.5–30 V DC in SELV class, and energy is stored in double-layer capacitors. On the DIN rail, the modules occupy 94 mm, 118 mm and 244 mm respectively. Unlike uninterruptible power supplies with battery packs, they require neither maintenance nor periodic cell replacement, which is an advantage wherever service access is difficult or costly-especially in rail vehicles and unattended facilities.

Applications include short power interruptions and voltage dips-the hold-up time is 3 min at 1 A for the 4 kJ version, 5 min at 1 A for 8 kJ and 4 min at 2.5 A for 16 kJ. For longer backup times, a battery UPS remains the more appropriate solution. All three modules include a USB interface (Modbus/RTU) for configuration and reading operating parameters; only the 16 kJ catalogue designation explicitly indicates it. All modules pass shock and vibration tests according to EN 61373.

An important design limitation: fire qualification of the energy-storage units is achieved only by using an external fire-resistant enclosure rated E10 or higher-this must be included at cabinet-design stage, not after delivery. Operating temperature reaches 60 °C, with 1%/K derating above 40 °C; startup is typically tested at −40 °C. Electromagnetic compatibility and environmental compliance are assessed together with the power supply used.
