Railway applications - power supply and rolling stock; technical criteria for coordination between the power-supply system and rolling stock.
The standard establishes electrical requirements for technical compatibility between rolling stock and electric traction power-supply systems: coordination of protection (neutral sections, current limitation, circuit-breaker coordination, regenerative braking), coordination of power between line capability and train demand, and assessment of compatibility with respect to harmonics and dynamic phenomena.
It applies to railways, urban rail transport integrated with the railway system and material transport systems; it includes basic provisions for battery trains. Pantograph–overhead contact line interaction and the control-command subsystem are outside its scope.
The standard is common to fixed installations and rolling stock and supports Directive 2016/797.
Measuring components in traction circuits declared to EN 50388-1 fall within the protection-coordination and harmonic criteria between the vehicle and substation that are verified when a vehicle is authorised for operation on the network.
