What the standard covers

The standard defines environmental conditions for rolling stock and onboard equipment in Europe: ranges for altitude, temperature, humidity, air movement, rain, snow and hail, icing, solar radiation, lightning and pollution - for mechanical, electromechanical, electrical and electronic components.

It defines conditions at the vehicle–environment interface treated as normal operating conditions. It does not apply to cranes, mining vehicles, cable railways or natural disasters. Applies to rolling stock.

What this means for selection

The temperature and altitude classes of EN 50125-1 provide a common language for vehicle specifications; a component declared to this standard has environmental parameters directly comparable with the purchaser's requirement.
