Railway applications - insulation coordination (rolling stock, fixed installations, signalling): clearances and creepage distances.
The standard covers insulation coordination - the selection, dimensioning and mutual matching of insulation within equipment and between items of equipment - for electrical and electronic equipment used in signalling, rolling stock and fixed installations.
It specifies clearances and creepage distances. It does not cover distances through solid or liquid insulation, through gases other than air, through air at pressure other than atmospheric pressure, or equipment operating under extreme conditions.
Distances according to EN 50124-1 take into account overvoltages and pollution in the railway environment (e.g. 3 kV DC traction supply, altitude up to 2000 m); dimensioning to industrial standards (IEC 60664-1) may result in insufficient distances for circuits supplied from the traction network.
EN 50124-1 specifies insulation distances taking account of overvoltages and pollution in the railway environment, for rolling stock, fixed installations and signalling. Dimensioning to IEC 60664-1 may result in insufficient distances for circuits supplied from the traction network.
IEC 62497-1:2010+A1:2013 has the same title; EN 50124-1:2017 is a standalone CENELEC standard.
