Railway applications - supply voltages of traction systems (fixed installations and rolling stock).
The standard specifies the main characteristics of traction-system supply voltages (nominal values, permissible ranges, long-duration overvoltages - Annex A) for railways, urban rail transport (trams, metros, mountain railways, trolleybuses) and material transport systems.
It applies both to fixed traction installations (including auxiliary equipment supplied from the traction system) and to rolling stock. It does not apply to traction systems in underground mines, cranes, cable railways or funiculars.
A power supply or apparatus declared for operation within the EN 50163 voltage ranges (e.g. 3 kV DC: 2.0–3.6 kV, temporarily 3.9 kV) is selected for the actual voltage fluctuations of the traction network, which industrial standards do not provide for.
Nominal traction-system voltages, their permissible ranges and long-duration overvoltages - for railways, trams, metros and trolleybuses; applies to fixed installations and rolling stock.
