What the standard covers

The standard specifies environmental conditions for the design and use of signalling and telecommunications equipment, including portable equipment (test, measuring and monitoring equipment), installed trackside and in station facilities in Europe.

It defines conditions at the equipment–environment interface and parameters for RAMS calculations. Equipment installed on vehicles is covered by EN 50125-1; the standard does not apply to cranes, mining vehicles or cable railways.

What this means for selection

An EN 50125-3 declaration indicates that the manufacturer designed the equipment for temperature, humidity and pollution classes appropriate to trackside and station installation, broader than the conditions of an industrial hall.
