What the standard covers

The standard specifies seismic tests for cabinets and racks made according to the IEC 60917 and IEC 60297 series: specimen dimensions, load distribution, acceleration parameters and three-axis excitation simulating an earthquake of a specified intensity.

It excludes cabinets with seismic isolation systems and electronic equipment installed in the cabinet. Vibration, shock, static load and climatic tests for empty cabinets, racks, subracks and enclosures are covered by Part 1 (IEC 61587-1).

What this means for selection

Compliance with IEC 61587-2 confirms tested seismic resistance of a cabinet for substations and railway signalling facilities in seismic zones; resistance to operational vibration and shock must be demonstrated according to IEC 61587-1 or railway standards (EN 61373 for rolling stock).
