What the standard covers

Part 2 applies to electric and diesel multiple units, railcars, locomotives and driving trailers; it provides rules for the arrangement and visibility of screens, controls and indicators on the driver's desk under all operating conditions, requirements for microphones and loudspeakers, and for the design of symbols.

Part 3 specifies rules for the design of information and user interfaces on displays in heavy-rail vehicle cabs (legibility, harmonised symbols and colours, command-interface rules). The series applies to rolling stock.

What this means for selection

An indicator or push-button on the driver's desk must meet the visibility and arrangement requirements of EN 16186-2 and the symbol and colour requirements of EN 16186-3; a manufacturer's declaration shortens the cab ergonomics assessment during vehicle authorisation.
