What the standard covers

The series specifies a multi-vendor generic cabling system in customer premises supporting voice, data, video and power delivery over cabling. Part 1 contains common requirements (channel and link classes, component categories, including categories 5–8 for balanced twisted pairs).

Part 3 covers industrial premises. The European counterpart is the EN 50173 series.

What this means for selection

A surge protective device for data lines declared compatible with a category according to ISO/IEC 11801-1 does not degrade the channel transmission class (NEXT, attenuation parameters) - the standard defines these parameters.
