Generic cabling systems for premises - general requirements.
The standard specifies the structure and configuration of backbone-cabling subsystems in generic cabling systems, transmission and environmental requirements for channels and links, reference implementations, component requirements and transmission-test procedures.
The 2018 edition added Categories 8.1 and 8.2 for copper cabling and OM5 fibre. Electrical safety and EMC are outside the scope of the standard.
A surge protective device in a data line selected for the channel class according to EN 50173-1 does not degrade the link's transmission parameters - the standard specifies the requirements that an inserted component must meet.
