Electromagnetic compatibility - degrees of protection against electromagnetic disturbances provided by enclosures (EM code). The enclosure-shielding equivalent of the IP code.
The standard specifies performance requirements, test methods and a classification procedure for degrees of protection provided by empty enclosures (cabinets, subracks) against electromagnetic disturbances in the 10 kHz–40 GHz range, together with an EM code for marking attenuation by the manufacturer.
It takes lightning phenomena and HEMP into account. Formally it belongs to Part 5 of the 61000 series (installation and mitigation guidelines), but it contains requirements and tests. It applies to an empty enclosure - it does not replace EMC testing of equipped apparatus.
The EM code according to 61000-5-7 allows attenuation of empty cabinets from different manufacturers to be compared when selecting an enclosure for signalling or radio equipment; an equipped enclosure requires separate testing.
