What the standard covers

The standard specified safety, reliability, protection-against-electric-shock and test requirements for electronic equipment used in power installations and its integration into systems. It excluded, among other things, household appliances, medical equipment, railway systems, telecommunications, protective relays, UPS systems, lighting and EV chargers.

EN 62477-1 has taken over the role of the safety standard for power electronic equipment (safety requirements for power converter systems).

What this means for selection

A reference to EN 50178 in a data sheet points to a withdrawn standard that explicitly excluded railway applications; for new projects, the designer should require confirmation to EN 62477-1 or the relevant product standard.
