What the standard covers

The standard applies to safety-related electronic systems (including subsystems and equipment) for railway signalling applications - both generic systems (application-class products) and systems for specific applications.

It covers life-cycle phases from system requirements specification (phase 4) to system acceptance (phase 10), including the Safety Case and SIL levels. It applies to fixed infrastructure (signalling); through onboard ERTMS/ETCS systems it also indirectly applies to onboard equipment.

What this means for selection

A component with documentation to EN 50129 (reliability data, SIL assessment) can be incorporated into the signalling system Safety Case; without such documentation, the integrator must perform its own safety analysis.
