What the standard covers

The series covers welding of railway vehicles and their components: Part 1 defines terms and applies to all assemblies, subassemblies and parts welded by any method (manual, partly or fully mechanised, automatic).

Part 2 defines classification levels for welded components and requirements for the welding manufacturer (quality system, qualifications of welding personnel, documentation, processes and inspection). The series forms the basis for certification of welding manufacturers for the railway sector; it applies to rolling stock.

What this means for selection

A welded structure (cabinet, rack) from a manufacturer certified to EN 15085-2 can be installed in a vehicle without additional welding qualification - vehicle integrators require this certificate from subcontractors.
