What the standard covers

The standard specifies a safety communication layer (services and protocol) based on communication profile family CPF 3 according to IEC 61784-1/-2 (CP 3/1, 3/2, 3/4, 3/5, 3/6) and IEC 61158 types 3 and 10. It defines mechanisms for transmitting safety-related messages in distributed fieldbus networks in accordance with the functional safety requirements of IEC 61508, for process control, manufacturing automation and machinery.

The IEC text does not use the trade name PROFIsafe; CPF 3 is the PROFIBUS/PROFINET family.
