Sensata/BEI HS35 Encoder (3.5" Hollow Shaft, Incremental and Absolute, Ex Option)

A rotary encoder with a 3.5-inch hollow shaft, available in through-shaft and blind-hollow-shaft versions, accepting shafts up to 1 inch in diameter. The hollow shaft eliminates the need for a coupling and separate bearing arrangement-the encoder mounts directly on the shaft journal, reducing the number of mechanical connections exposed to bogie vibration. Reducing bushings, including insulating types, allow installation on smaller shaft diameters. The aluminium body, die-cast aluminium cover, AISI 303 stainless-steel shaft and sealed 6807-series bearings provide IP65 protection according to EN 60529 (NEMA 4 and 13). Axial load is 50 N and radial load 80 N. Maximum speed is 6000 min⁻¹ and continuous speed 4000 min⁻¹. Supply is 4.75–30 V DC, with current consumption below 75 mA.

The incremental version provides up to 500,000 pulses per revolution at bandwidth up to 1 MHz, with HTL, TTL or open-collector output and programmable resolution. The absolute version offers up to 16-bit resolution with SSI, parallel or analogue output. A dual-output option provides signal redundancy, two resolutions, or supplies two controllers from one encoder. Operating temperature is −40…+100 °C for Standard and Low resolution categories and −40…+80 °C for High resolution.

Shock resistance is 500 m/s² for 11 ms according to EN 60068-2-27, vibration resistance 200 m/s² from 5–2000 Hz according to EN 60068-2-6, electromagnetic compatibility according to EN 61000-6-2 and EN 61000-6-4, and humidity up to 93% RH non-condensing at 20 °C. Versions for hazardous areas are classified Ex ec IIC T4 Gc or Ex ec IIC T3 Gc, in intrinsically safe or non-sparking versions, with UL, ATEX and IECEx approvals.

The manufacturer targets the series at industrial drives in steelmaking, woodworking, wind energy and mining; the datasheet does not list railway applications. It does not declare compliance with EN 50155, EN 61373 or EN 45545-2-suitability for onboard installation must be confirmed by the manufacturer.
