Surge protective devices (SPD) - safety requirements for the North American market.
The standard covers enclosed and open-type surge protective devices (SPD) for repeated limiting of transient overvoltages in 50/60 Hz power circuits up to 1000 V and in photovoltaic applications up to 1500 V DC. It defines five SPD types by installation location: Type 1 (from transformer to service equipment), Type 2 (downstream of the main overcurrent protection), Type 3 (point of utilization), Type 4 (component assemblies), Type 5 (discrete components).
It covers permanently connected, cord-connected and plug-in SPDs for indoor and outdoor use.
A K-PV-type SPD listed to UL 1449 Ed. 5 has tested behavior at 1500 V DC and under end-of-life fault conditions, as required for exporting equipment to the US/Canadian market.
